How to Use White Marble Rocks for Landscaping: Ecological and Lovely Ideas for Perfect Garden


Marble is a natural and noble stone, widely used not only in construction, but also for domestic and landscaping purposes.

Its waste is crushed for mulching in landscape design, and serve as an excellent decoration in landscape art. The latest invention – “elastic” marble, lightweight and cheap, is a perfect solution for creating ponds and fountains.


White Marble Rocks for Landscaping: Pros and Cons

For landscaping, marble is usually used in form of chips. Their advantages:

  1. Ecological friendly material (it doesn’t affect nearby soil and plants, safe for a human).
  2. High decorative properties.
  3. Perfect compatibility with plants and other garden structures.
  4. Able to hide shady garden sections, where lawn and flowers can’t normally grow.
  5. Ideal for hot climate or for damp places within a garden.
  6. Durability.
  7. Resistance to harsh environmental conditions.
  8. Growth-inhibiting power for weed.
  9. Low background radiation level.


  1. Difficult to remove since it is installed.

White marble landscape rocks can be of different shapes, sizes and colors:

  1. Marble flour (2,5 mm).
  2. Marble sand (0,16 – 2,5 mm).
  3. Marble chips (2,5 – 10 mm).
  4. Marble crushed stone (10 – 20 mm).

Marble rocks for landscaping are represented in a great variety of colors:

  1. Colored marble: carbonates of red, yellow, brown, blue, beige, pink, green, black, etc. color.
  2. Gray.
  3. White: classical variant for landscaping.
The color of a marble depends on its mineral composition.

Marble perfectly matches with huge boulders and wood, glass and metal, moss and concrete, which gives the stone the ability to be a central part of unusual and surprising compositions.

Marble rocks don’t enter in any chemical reactions with soil or plant residues. Besides, it retains warmth inside the soil and give the warmth back to the plants at night, protect the soil against erosion, washing-out and weed, stabilize the process of evaporation, protect roots of heat exhaustion.

As for environmental activity, though, marble rock is sustainable to rain, snow, frost and sun heat, it doesn’t need annual maintenance. In the course of time, marble rock can slightly crumble and break, so, it needs periodic renewal.

Advice: use marble chips as mulch to protect the soil against erosion, rainout and weeds.

Photo5Using as mulch, marble chips can be a perfect companion for adult trees, bushes and well-grown solitaire plants. Besides, it will do with perennial herbs, flowers and shrubs. For example, it will be a perfect composition of barberry, saxifrage, primula and euphorbia above white marble chips in form of rockery.

Marble chips are suitable for any type of garden: formal, landscape, English and Japanese.

Recommendation: if you have a garden in other style or just have finely cut lawn, you can use marble chips for making paths, mulching floor in arbour or pergola, or just make a parking lot for your car near a house (design ideas for your yard).


If you live in mild or hot climate, you can use the following idea: use yellow marble to imitate desert. Here, you can plant cactuses or other succulents.

“Marble garden”. To make such a garden one need a relatively huge area (from 2 to 5 hundreds square meters). Cover the entire future marble garden with landscape fabric and with marble of pastel color on it (gray, yellow, sandy, white). Place flat granite stones to make a path in any direction you need. On sandy marble chips you can use gray granite or vice versa. Such garden will be incomplete without plants. Pay attention on: cover-ground phlox, stonecrop, goatsbeard, thyme. Also, plant different low-growing shrubs: prairie weed, feather fern, trailing mahonia.

White marble chips within “dry” brook. Use old clay jug edgewise. Scatter marble chips of white color in form of brook, as if it runs out of a jug. Plant lavender, sage and primrose near a “brook”.

White marble chips are neutral and can complement any type of rockery or flowerbed. It can also be accompanied with gray marble chips and big stones of limestone. Such rockery is worth adding plantain lily, small pines and junipers. Usually, white marble chips are accompanied with pine bark mulch that marks marble out making it even more attractive.

Warning: creating marble garden, do not place plants above the landscape fabric!

Make crosswise holes in it and dig holes according to the size of root system. Add some fertile soil and fertilizers of prolonged effect. The layer of marble chips is approximately 5 cm. Wash it with water before placing.

How to Take Care?

Photo99Marble rocks don’t need some special maintenance or polishing throughout a year. It should be washed with weak stream of water. Take away litter, weeds and leaves. Add some rocks if some of them were washed out.

Be careful! Do not use harsh chemicals when washing marble. It can be toxic to plants and soil.

To calculate the number of marble chips for a rockery one should consider the design of a flowerbed. Usually, a layer should be no more, than 5 cm (approximately 5-7 kilos on one square meter).
