How to landscape rocks in yard? To create the right landscape design it is necessary to achieve the unity between plants, water, stones and other landscape structures.
Your first steps in decorating your garden – planning and design, landscape gardening and the creation of landscape structures. In the sections below we will be speaking about each step of creating design with garden landscaping rocks separately.
Planning and design
This is the first and compulsory step in rock yard landscaping, so do not ignore it. Pre-planning is needed to implement all the engineering works (irrigation systems, lighting), as well as to zone space, creating the area for recreation, farming area, play area and a garden.
When choosing plants, you need take into account such factors as style of landscape design, soil composition, temperature conditions, humidity level and types of chosen rocks for garden landscaping. Only in this case, the plants will become an integral part of landscape design.
Creating decorative landscape structures
This step is optional but landscaping rock garden with stones will make the whole design completed. Today, a rockery is an extremely popular type of a flowerbed that is able to decorate a garden of any style, shape and size.
As a matter of fact, rockery is quite similar to alpine garden, but it differs in terms of laying out rocks (in alpine garden rocks imitate natural going out of geological material from the soil, in rockery stones can be put in any direction). Also, a rockery can boast with wider range of flowers that will match the whole composition.
Rockery can be developed on both flat and hilly land, though “hilly” rockeries look more interesting, because in this case they are possible to imitate scree debris and spectacular cascade. The most attractive rockeries are made in small gorges and above the water.
Now, let’s speak about how to choose rocks and plants for rockery.
How to choose rocks?
It is recommended to choose rocks for garden rockery of neutral colors: gray, brown, white, black and sandy. For example, for a single-layer laying choose large pieces of solid rock as dolomite limestone, marl and sandstone, which have pronounced flat edges.
It is undesirable to combine garden landscape rocks of different types and structures. The size of stones greatly matters: two-three boulders will look more attractive than a pile of small stones. It is necessary to combine stones of different sizes.
To prepare a soil and eliminate foreign seeds, it is necessary to dig a shape of a future rockery approximately at a depth of 15-30 cm. Cover the soil with geotextile or frost cloth.
Then, make a “pillow” from sand, gravel, brick rubble or crushed stone. Such a “pillow” plays a role of drainage layer that gives plants the opportunity to grow in appropriate conditions and doesn’t allow the stones to subside. The next step is to fill the rockery with a substrate to the level of the soil (planting soil, sand, peat, crushed stone – 3:2:1:1).
The installation of the stones is the most crucial moment. All stones should be oriented towards the same direction and their flattest and wide edges should lie horizontally, perhaps at a same angle.
Landscaping rock gardens is very interesting activity and we highly recommend you to try it.
What Plants Are Best Suitable for a Rockery?
There is a great variety of plants suitable for decorating a rockery, basically – dwarf varieties of foliose and conifer plants, mountain plants. The main rule is that all plants should not exceed 1.5 m in height. All plants should be carefully combined with stones – taller plants with bigger stones.
Ideas for Rockeries
Spectacular decoration of a rockery – the stones covered with water-proof paint that is able to glow at night. Another interesting option is to mulch the free spaces with crushed granite of different colors making patterns (gray-white-black).
Also, you can add small glass stones that will be very unusual in terms of classical rockery. Glass should be white or clear.

Types of Rockeries
Rockeries can be of three main types:
- Stable rockery: cardinal stones are big, smaller ones are grouped with each other. All ground-covering plants are also grouped and these groups are divided by stones.
- Changeable landscape: this rockery gives the opportunity to change plants annually, add new or remove old plants throughout a year.
- Temporary rockery: planted with small seedlings that will grow and change their size and shape. Any mulch or stones there are also of temporary nature.
Rockery is a nice option to create an attractive landscape composition if you do not like formal flowerbeds or if you don’t want to take much care after plants you are growing. Rockery is a unique composition that will please you for many years.
