Create an amazing border rocks landscaping design: most popular ideas of edging

There are many ways to use the landscape rocks in your outdoor landscape design. One of them is to create the borders, edges and walls with its help. Adding of the visual limits helps to add the structure to the featureless green lawn or to help organizing the multilevel area.

There are plenty of different variants of shapes and colors that are available for the landscaping rocks on the market – this choice you will make according to the color palette of your yard.

Maybe you like the warm color of the limestone, or you prefer the cold charm of granite, the classy look of marble or vintage red brick, all those rocks can be used for the borders and walls. What I want to tell you is the possible styles of the edging.

Flowerbed or walkway border

Sometimes you absolutely need to create some kind of rock landscape edging borders for flowerbeds, first of all for them to stand out from the grass and secondly for any children and other reckless people who might walk on the lawn ignoring the walkway.

Creative border for flowerbedThe pathway might need the edging for two reasons: simply for the style and beauty or to hold the mulch and small gravel it’s paved with on its place. In any case if you choose to make the border rocks landscaping you need to prepare the ground for it. It’s not too hard.

How to make a rockery border? There’re just two steps:

  1. Dig a shallow trench.
  2. Put a layer of sand to it before placing the rocks.

The sand is creating a pillow that will let a proper drainage and will help to keep your rock borders for landscape in place, avoiding the rocks sinking into the wet soft soil (find out effective ways of killing unnecessary grass).

One of the classic option of landscape borders with rocks is to use the bricks. If you get your inspiration from the picturesque English suburbs – make an inclined brick border.

All you need to do is do set the bricks (better weather worn and uneven ones) in the fallen domino manner, very close to each other. That’s it! It is as simple as it sounds and needs almost no maintenance late (learn how to clean rocks properly? ).

Tip! If you are using the inclined bricks in several places in your garden, make sure the angle and direction of inclination is the same. Otherwise the overall impression might be spoiled.

Another simple way is to lay a landscape rock border of the river stone. Rounded pebbles of different shades can bring the tranquility and peacefulness to the whole set up.

If you want to keep them on the dark ground instead of placing them on the sand for the better contrast, make sure you pretreated the soil for unwanted weed first.

A wall

Medium-height wall borderSometimes you need more than just an edging, but a medium-heights wall. Of course you wouldn’t want to spoil the landscape with the primitive concrete authority, but prefer something more beautiful.

Here’re four option for your consideration:

  1. Bricks.
  2. Crushed rock.
  3. Concrete and river rock combination.
  4. Rock blocks.

Bricks are easy. All you need to do is to place them one on another with some concrete mix in between. It will look more interesting if you use old bricks and lay them without too much precision. Also plant some creeping plants to decorate otherwise plain wall.

If you’re an admirer of the natural rock, you can use the technology you might have seen on the fields and southern farms. You will need a lot of big and medium size crushed limestone rocks. They should not have a perfect shape or ideally flat sides.

You need to lay them, connecting with concrete in shape of the wall, but avoid putting too much of the solution. The effect you are trying to recreate is as if the stones are just laying one on top of another without anything but their weight holding them together.

One more possibility is to use the concrete as the main element for the wall base, but decorate it with the natural rocks. Usually the river pebbles of a medium size are perfect for this. You can push them a little bit into the concrete base, close to each other in a random pattern. This will be enough to make a dull concrete wall a nice designer element.

Attention! Make this kind of wall by small segments, the concrete dries fast and if you let it to, it will be complicated to change what’s done.

The most expensive but very impressive way of placing a wall is to create it simply from the big blocks of certain rock. Usually it will be a limestone blocks, but the possibilities include lava rock, marble, granite etc. Most probably you will need some professional help for those, as the huge heavy stones require special lifting equipment.
